Stupid Online Trends

This post is going to sound like I'm a whinging old person wishing for the olden days but it's really not about that. I use Facebook, I follow people on Twitter, I blog, I do a LOT online. I try to keep up with what's new and trending - although not having a Smartphone means I haven't really accessed things like Instagram yet etc. I'm not the MOST online-savvy but I'm certainly not a pensioner who hasn't worked out how to get 'on the email'. I don't mind that new sites keep popping up and I will try to get a handle on them.

I don't mind text speak in the right context. I don't approve of it on job applications (I have actually seen a job application cover letter that was signed 'C U L8R') nor in emails in a work context but if it saves on cost, go right ahead. As long as I understand it, it's fine. It doesn't belong in certain situations but it's okay in others.

But here are some of the things that really get on my nerves in social media.

1. The phrase "Said no one ever" and variants on that phrase! NOT FUNNY! It is a stupid fad and it needs to stop! It's not even clever sarcasm.

2. People who start their statuses with "That awkward moment...". There are two reasons why this irritates me. The first is that in 75% of cases, the scenario they are talking about is not awkward. It might be annoying, stupid or funny, but not awkward. I don't think many people who use this phrase understand what the word means. Secondly, just because one person writes a status starting like that and you found it funny doesn't mean you should do it too.

3. Amazeballs, Cray Cray, and the worst one.....Ermagherd! Who invented these? As if OMG wasn't moronic enough, ZOMG popped up! Probably created by the same person in Essex who started the term 'well jell'. Once person started it and a whole heap of additional idiots (or should I say "eejits") followed like rats following the Pied Piper.

4. People who write LOL as a response because they can't think of anything witty to say. Before you use the term LOL, did the comment/picture/joke  you're responding to actually make you 'laugh out loud'? Because if it didn't, it doesn't warrant an LOL. There's a time and a place for that abbreviation.

5. People who use 'rape' or 'rapey' colloquially. This is a real problem area that bothers me a lot. I have seen so many comments saying 'he has rapey eyes' or 'she raped my Facebook' or using either term casually. Rape is not funny. It is not a term that you should use loosely.

6. Hashtags! When the status is shorter than the amount of Hashtags you're using, you're overdoing it!

7. Om nom nom. Nobody ever says this. In fact, nobody has ever said this out loud. It is one of those irritating catch phrases that originally popped up on memes about funny cats which was okay.......

........but then caught on by just about everyone.

8. Sharing bullshit stories such as FB privacy warnings, warnings about products, heartwarming tear jerking stories and other chain mail. Firstly, if the story says at the end, "share with all your friends", it's probably crap. Secondly, it literally takes a few seconds to Google the first line of the story and find out if Snopes or Hoaxslayer have disproven it. Most of the time, they are fake and you will see it pop up as the first item in the Google search! The reason these stupid things get passed around for 10 years is because people will believe anything they read. I'm sick of my news feed being flooded with them, to be quite frank, and I've started hiding the posts of the serial offenders, the ones who refuse to check before sharing.

9. Creating 'Demotivational posters' that defeat the purpose of parodying the Motivational posters. They used to be funny. They are not funny anymore because too many people with too much spare time, juvenile sense of humour, very poor grammar/spelling and access to Microsoft Paint create them. Same goes for the old parody of the 'Mastercard - Priceless' ads. They were clever, once, and when the first ones came out, it was fun to forward them on. But nowadays, some are just in bad taste, racist, sexist or bordering on pornography. There is such thing as too much of a good thing. Furthermore, what is so funny about changing the spelling of words and using the incorrect tense on pictures of funny cats. For example, "U iz workin' too hard. iz makin' me tired". Or this one, a PRIME example:

Spelling words wrong = not funnier. Grammatical errors = not funnier. Incorrect tense = not funnier. It just makes you seem like an ill-educated sheep.

10. "So many feels." Why make yourself sound stupid and childish? I don't get it. No wonder literacy is at an all-time low when this is what the next generation is hearing!

11. "Like for an inbox". Talk about fishing for compliments. If somebody hasn't posted on your wall and you need to write this, maybe you're just not interesting enough for them to communicate with you.

12. Using overcomplicated emoticons. The smiley face, sad face, crying face, winky face, poking tongue out and maybe a heart/broken heart are all you need. Enough with the horses and flowers and the Homer Simpsons and the Octopuses (and before you correct me and say 'Octopi', I looked it up and it is possibly a myth!). The emoticon is to convey emotion. That's all. But while I'm there, if you are going to use an emoticon, make sure that you mean it. Don't put a winky face on something you know is going to offend someone. Putting a winky face on a clear insult doesn't make it less insulting.

And I'm done.
